Renaming the Gartner Magic Quadrant
If you are involved in enterprise software development, you have heard of the Gartner Magic Quadrant. The vendor is charted on "completeness of vision", or how well they understand where the space is going, and "ability to execute", how well they can complete that vision. Organizations that have both are in the "Magic Quadrant."
Enterprise software vendors have MarCom groups which are almost solely tasked with putting their company in the magic quadrant. This usually has nothing to do with the quality of the solution, of the vision of the organization, but the MarCom's group to be able to sell people on the solution or on the organization's vision. If the group successfully puts the organization in the Magic Quadrant, they all earn their bonuses for the year.
As a result, I hearby re-christen the Magic Quadrant the Gartner G-Spot.
Keep that in mind every time people panic over Gartner ratings, and you will feel a little better.
